Literacy

Big Brown Bear developed a number of interactive teaching resources for use with interactive whiteboards.

These have been successfully used in classes around the world since 2005 to help teach English.

More details of the key resources can be found below:

Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives

Choose between nouns, verbs and adjectives. Drag five examples from a choice of fifteen onto the launch pad to win the game and launch the rocket.

This resource supports the following learning objectives from the National Literacy Strategy:

  • To use the term noun, verb and adjective appropriately
  • To identify nouns, verbs and adjectives
Identify nouns, verbs and adjectives

Prefixes

There are five lists of prefix words with a total of 160 words.

Ten words are picked at random from a selected list and then each word is split into the prefix and the root word.

Pupils drag a word and a prefix into the box at the bottom of the screen. The word can then be checked to see if it is correct. Correct words are removed and incorrect ones are reset back into their original position

Match the prefixes

Suffixes

Ten words are selected at random from a given list and then each word is split into the root word and its suffix.

Pupils then drag a suffix and a root word into the box at the bottom of the screen. The word can then be checked to see if it is correct. Correct words are removed and incorrect ones are reset back into their original position.

Find the suffixes

Phoneme Count

Count the number of phonemes in 10 words. Pick a word, count the phonemes and drag the word into the correct dotted area at the top. Your score is revealed after ten words, including a list of any that need to be recounted.
